Belfast City Cemetery is one of the finest examples of a Victorian Garden Cemetery in the UK. The cemetery offers a remarkable insight into the history of Belfast and boasts many fine examples of Victorian, Edwardian and Gothic revival architecture. In 2016 Belfast City Council embarked upon a major redevelopment project at the City Cemetery. The Council’s plans include a number of exciting initiatives designed to enhance the existing heritage within the site as well as the public’s ability to access and enjoy it. As part of the project a new visitor/education centre will be built on site and many of the existing heritage features within the Cemetery will be restored.
In 2017 Kaleidoscope was appointed as consultants to support the development of the City Cemetery project. Kaleidoscope worked closely with the Belfast City Council to develop the plans for the site and to secure the necessary funding to carry out the project. In 2018 the project was awarded funding of £1.68m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The project is currently underway and Kaleidoscope is continuing to work with the Belfast City Council in the delivery of this exciting initiative.
